Herd Quarter Horses

About Herd Quarter Horses

In 1976 Jess began his career in the equine business making saddles and custom tack.  His dedication to quality leather work would lead him to design beautiful show saddles that would lean him toward becoming interested in showing in Western Pleasure.  Jess started training horses for outside customers in 1986, and then started to replace saddle orders with horses in training.  To this day Jess still gets requests for saddle orders, even as far as Europe.

Herd QHJess took the same dedication in saddle making and applied it toward training horses, he has trained several winning futurity horses, and an AQHA High Point Youth Western Pleasure horse, several world show champions and reserve champions, top ten and finalists.

Jess and Maureen combined their training talents in 1997, when at that time Jess had been an accomplished horse trainer for many years residing in Oklahoma, while Maureen had been living in Kansas and later Texas.  Maureen had been building a reputation for starting and training several nice young horse that she would sell to some of the top horse trainers in the business.  Often she would only get the chance to take them to one or two shows before they would be going home with a new trainer as far as California and Florida.  Her eye for a good prospect, and the chance to work with some of the best horsemen and women in the business, gave her the ability to create and train several horses that went on to become famous in the Quarter Horse industry.

Together, Jess and Maureen have successfully trained many young horses to go on to become great show horses for both amateurs and youths, and they pride themselves for having a solid training program that is the foundation for any event.  "Our training program is basic, with no tricks or gimmicks, just a lot of consistent work with a consistent program.  Fads may come and go and you have to adjust here and there but the basic training program should stay the same."

We believe a trained horse should be easy and fun to ride, it should be able to be ridden by anyone.

Herd Quarter Horses has not only produced some great horses but they have also started some very talented horse trainers as well.  Brian Baker of Sunbury Ohio worked for the Herds during his summer months of college.  Brian has recently been dominating the Futurities, his hard working personality, talent on a young horse, and overall commitment is what make him a true success.

David Dellin of  Sanger Texas worked for Jess during his teenage years, through his college summers.  David is a 3 time World Champion horse trainer, and also do to his strong commitment, hard work, and talent is the recipe to his unbelievable successes.

Jess and Maureen knew during the time that they worked for them that they would both become top level horse trainers because not only were they hard workers, they were always wanted to learn and advance their knowledge.  We have come to recognize talent in our assistants, just like you recognize talent in a young horse, They both need to have a lot of heart and desire to become a champion, and the work ethic to make it all happen.

Sarah McGee, who started riding with us as a novice amateur, decided in 2007 to turn in her amateur card and start training professionally. She had a very successful first year, she won 2 PHBA World Championships, and 1 Reserve World Championship, APHA Riechert HUS circuit champion, several Junior and Senior Hunter Under Circuit championships.  Over the next several years Sarah went on to win several PHBA World Championships and several circuit championships in AQHA, PHBA, APHA, and PtHa.  In 2010 Sarah decided to return to college and finish her business degree.  We will miss Sarah and hope to see her showing and training in the future.

In the past years together Jess and Maureen have trained numerous World show champions, futurity champions, circuit champions, regional champions, All-around winners, Congress Reserve Champion, Congress Top five, AQHYA Top Ten, PHBA Golden horse and State High Point Champions.
